The truth is Gap is in a slump and after 12 months of declining sales they think they might have the answer - a major makeover. First step, creating different entrances for men and women. Apparently a study they did showed that men and women shop differently. Oh really? (sarcasm, sarcasm) By having separate entrances Gap hopes to create different shopping experiences for men and women in the same store. The men's section will be very straightforward.....what to buy to create certain outfits, etc. The women's will be more interesting....requiring a little more browsing and the clothes will be organized by occasion such as work or going out. In addition the traditional white walls of Gap will be painted with warm colors with original artwork and gallery lighting throughout. There will even be lounges for bored companions. Oh and here's the kicker....they plan to offer pagers for the fitting rooms, so you can continue to shop until a room opens up. They've already made these changes at a few stores in the Denver area and they seem to be working. Visitors are staying longer and spending more. Stores in Hartford, Conn. and San Diego will be redesigned this fall and by 2006 as many as 10 cities could be seeing store renovations. Sounds great to me and from a picture a saw in a magazine the new stores look very appealing. However, I just hope they change something about the clothes for sale in the new stores because as of late nothing has seemed real appealing about those. Hey, if you have been to one of the new stores, drop me a line. I would love to hear what you think. |
